About the institution

One of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's oldest and busiest hospitals.

Founded during the colonial era and named after Lady Reading, the hospital has grown into a Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) under provincial health reforms, combining patient care with undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It functions as the principal referral centre for Peshawar and the wider region, receiving patients from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the merged tribal districts.

As an MTI, the hospital is run by a Board of Governors and a Hospital Director, with clinical departments led by heads of department who also supervise resident doctors and medical students attached through affiliated medical colleges.

Nursing services

The nursing corps that keeps every ward running.

Nursing staff provide round-the-clock bedside care across wards, ICUs, the operation theatre complex and the Emergency Department, working in shift teams under a structured leadership hierarchy led by the Nursing Directorate.

Nurses are the first and most constant point of contact for admitted patients — administering medication, monitoring vitals, assisting physicians on rounds, and guiding families through ward routines and discharge preparation.

Nursing Director / Principal Matron

Oversees nursing standards, staffing and training across the hospital.

Charge Nurse (per ward / department)

Leads the nursing team on a specific ward or in the Emergency Department each shift.

Staff Nurses

Deliver direct bedside care, medication administration and patient monitoring.

Triage & ER Nurses

First clinical assessment of patients arriving at the Emergency Department.

Student Nurses

Emergency department

Emergency & Trauma Centre

The Emergency Department (ER) receives patients around the clock and is one of the busiest trauma-receiving units in the province, handling everything from road traffic injuries to cardiac emergencies and burns.

If this is a medical emergency

Call 1122 or come directly to the ER — do not wait for an appointment.

Emergency care is provided regardless of a patient's ability to pay for initial stabilisation.

Triage categories

On arrival, every patient is assessed by a triage nurse and assigned a category that determines how quickly they are seen.

Category 1 — Resuscitation

Immediate, life-threatening condition. Seen instantly by the emergency team.

Category 2 — Emergent

Serious condition requiring care within minutes.

Category 3 — Urgent

Needs prompt attention but is currently stable.

Category 4 — Non-urgent

Minor illness or injury; longer wait is safe.

What happens when you arrive

A typical Emergency Department visit follows four stages:

01

Arrival & registration

Basic details are recorded at the ER reception or by paramedic handover for ambulance cases.

02

Triage assessment

A triage nurse checks vitals and assigns a triage category to set the order of care.

03

Examination & treatment

An emergency physician examines the patient, orders tests if needed, and begins treatment.

04

Admission or discharge

Patients are either admitted to a ward/ICU, referred onward, or discharged with instructions.
